Press release

Submission of the first « Ethics and Finance » report to United Nations representatives

On April the 24th 2014, at the occasion of the XIIth International CIFA Forum, Arthur Cohen (35 years, philosopher) and Emmanuel Rocque (37 years, senior official) have submitted to the delegates of the United Nations (DESA) a one hundred-page report entitled “Ethics and Finance – Practical solutions for the improvement of financial behavior and achieving the Millennium Development Goals”.

The result of three years’ work and a study which gathered an impressive number of financial practitioners (among which are Jean-Claude Trichet, Jacques de Larosière and Jean Peyrelevade), together with academics, researchers, philosophers, historians, economists, and sociologists, the report offers an original and precise definition of ethical finance and proposes readily practical concrete recommendations as solutions to reduce operational and systemic risks.

The report submission's ceremony will be hosted in New York in presence of Member states.

Some reactions :

Jacques de Larosière (Governor of the Bank of France between 1987 and 1993, Managing director of the IMF between 1978 and 1987, President of the EBRD between 1987 and 1993) :
A very rich and interesting report. […] [The historic and philosophic approach] is fundamental and outstandingly explained with this point of view. […] The recommendations suggested here seem excellent to me.”

François Rachline (Professor of economy, special adviser to the President of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council) :
“It is not only a report, but also a real opus, rich and documented, brought to elevate the debate.”

Danielle Cohen-Levinas (Philosopher, Professor in the Sorbonne) :
“I am very impressed by the precision, not only of the diagnosis, but the concrete proposals which are defined here as so many solutions to the systematic problems of finance. It is a bright and hopeful report nevertheless. I am obviously very sensitive to the way ethics is envisaged in its most empirical aspects […]. This text seems to me completely fundamental. Ethics is a word used wildly today. We do not even know anymore what it means in contents, it is so much tarnished. When we read this report, it becomes completely obvious that the future of ethics is not anymore only in philosophical speculation closed in itself; it has to find emergent vistas, as in the problems in finance.”
